A staggering spectacular

SHOWPIECES for violin from the superbly matched duo of Diana Galvydyte, violin and Amandine Savary, piano, brought a spectacular close to this BCMS season.

Pergolesi et al, originators of the tunes Stravinsky adopted for his ballet Pulchinella, were performed here in the composer’s own arrangement with the very effective tonal edge available from Galvydyte’s full-toned instrument.

Another composer feeding off the inspiration of a predecessor, Esa-Pekka Salonen’s violin solo Lachen Verlernt takes the sound world of Schoenberg and has produced a modern showstopper of extraordinary brilliance.

Saint-Saens’ Study in form of the Waltz attracted the fertile musicianship of Ysaye with all that says in terms of technical fireworks in his arrangement.

And there should be no underestimation of Savary’s excellent pianism.

Morning evoked in misty hues, brightening as the sun dawns on the Belgian countryside.

The staggering virtuosity demanded by Waxman in his Carmen Fantasie, taken from the tumbling tunes of Bizet, shows Galvydyte, who studied at the Ciurlionis Gymnasium of Art in Lithuania, capable of any acrobatic trick in the book.
