The second half of our 68th Season opens on Saturday 4 February at 3 pm with a recital by the celebrated cellist Guy Johnston. Over the last decade, Guy Johnston has forged a place as one of the leading cellists of his generation. Early recognition includes BBC Young Musician 2000, playing at the 2001 Opening Night of the Proms and a Classical Brit Award. Guy has played with leading orchestras worldwide and is regularly broadcast on radio 3. This season sees Johnston performing the Elgar Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the Brighton International Music Festival and performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra, and Budapest Strings.
Guy enjoys collaborating in chamber music festivals at home and abroad. Future performances include the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Kings College Cambridge, and abroad in Bavaria, at the Moritzburg Festival and in Switzerland and Sweden. He is a founder member of the award winning Aronowitz Ensemble and regularly attends Open Chamber Music, Prussia Cove including a tour in October 2011 which culminated with a performance at the Wigmore Hall, London. Guy has recently been in residence at Aldeburgh Music with Leon McCawley studying and performing the works of Benjamin Britten, and enjoyed collaborating in the Cheltenham Festival playing works by Schumann with celebrated cellist, Steven Isserlis.
His accompanist is also a celebrated performer, Ashley Wass, first prizewinner at the London international Competition in 1997, and a finalist at the Leeds Piano Competition in 2000. He made his proms debut in 2008. Ashley Wass has received critical acclaim for his recordings across a wide range of repertoire, with glowing reviews for his interpretations of Liszt, Bridge and Franck among numerous others. Ashley is also much in demand as a chamber musician and in 2007 toured the USA and Europe with violinist Sarah Chang, appearing at venues such as Philadelphia's Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall in New York. He spent three summers as a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, playing chamber music with musicians such as Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode and members of the Guarneri Quartet and Beaux Arts Trio.
Guy and Ashley's programme includes the first BCMS performance of the Samuel Barber Cello Sonata, one of the great cello sonatas of the 20th century, as well as established masterpieces by Beethoven and Brahms. |
