PACA PIANO COMPETITION at St Peter's Church, Parkstone, Poole
BCMS is giving the second prize of £50 when thirteen talented young pianists, all under twenty, from Dorset and the surrounding counties take part in the fourth 'PACA' piano competion. Each will give a recital lasting about twenty minutes. The internationally renowned pianist, Philip Fowke will once again be the adjudicator. He will announce the winner in the evening, after giving an informal - and if two years ago is anything to go by - highly entertaining workshop with the young players. The competition is organised by Poole Arts Association, a self-funding, non profit-making association for the support of all the arts in the area.
Most of the young players taking part hope to become involved in music professionally once they leave school and most of them play other instruments as well - including violin, flute, clarinet and xylophone. Two past winners, Cordelia Williams and Ralph Wilkinson, have brothers taking part this time. They will all be playing the small Yamaha grand, which was bought by the association eight years ago with the help of a National Lottery grant. The first prize of £100 has been sponsored once again by 2CRFM in memory of the late broadcaster, Andy Lee. The second prize of £50 has been donated by the Bournemouth Chamber Music Society as part of their Young Musicians Development Scheme.
The standard of playing at the competition has been consistently high in the first two events, so you should be in for a treat. Tickets for the whole event cost only £2.50, available at the door, and include a glass of wine in the evening. Doors open at nine in the morning and the competition starts at 9.30am. The prize giving is at 7.30pm and you can come and go as you please throughout the day. |
